Amanda Blumenherst holds out defending champ Kimberly Kim
Amanda Blumenherst showed her toughness as a college player at NCAA champion Duke when she beat the 15-year-old Kimberley Kim 5 and 3 Saturday in their semi-final match at the U.S. Women’s Amateur golf tournament 2007.
The other player to advance to Sunday’s 36-hole final round at Crooked Stick Golf Club was Maria Jose Uribe of Colombia, who beat Ha Na Jang of South Korea 2 and 1.
“It was really fun,” Blumenherst said. “I played really solid, hit the ball well and the putts were falling.”
The 20-year-old Blumenherst’s form had been consistent over her last three rounds in only conceding one bogey. Blumenherst continued that form and went 3-up at the sixth hole and 4-up at the eighth on Kim mistakes. She birdied No. 10 after placing her second shot within a foot of the pin, and she birdied the par-5 No. 11 after an excellent pitch from the sand.
“I can’t believe she played that good,” Kim said. “I knew I was out of it. She just kept birdieing. I tried to take it as far as I could, but … oh, well.”
Kimberley Kim was the youngest champion in the U.S. Women’s Amateur golf tournament’s 107-year history when she won as a fourteen year old in 2006.
