Young Colombian Maria Jose Uribe Wins US Womens Amateur Title
17-year-old Colombian, Maria Jose Uribe, began her tournament winning at the top when she defeated two-time college player of the year Amanda Blumenherst to win the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur championship on Sunday.
Maria experienced what college play will be like when she starts as a freshman at UCLA in the fall.
Amanda Blumenherst’s form leading into the final was solid with only one bogey in three rounds. It was the sort of form that enabled her to shut out 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion 15-year-old Kimberley Kim in the semi-final.
Neither player managed to gain a significant lead the entire 36-hole-match-play final round at Crooked Stick Golf Club. They arrived at the penultimate hole all-square.
Both tee shots landed on the green. Blumenhurst’s first put of twenty feet went six feet past and it took her two putts from there. Uribe’s first putt went to the right but she tapped in.
The par-4 final hole had Blumenhurst’s long putt two foot to the right. Uribe holed out from six feet to take the championship.
“She’s obviously a great player,” Blumenherst said. “She beat me.”
