Tony Finau aims to be the best player in the world

Tony Finau seventeen and his brother Gipper Finau sixteen, Polynesian boys of Samoan – Tongan parentage, are exhibiting the power and strength well-known of Pacific Islander athletes that grace the rugby fields of New Zealand.
In the Finau case, however, that power and strength has been channeled with finesse into the sport of golf and is causing prominent people to turn and look.
Recently the vice president of a major golf company watched in awe as Tony Finau hit a drive 420 yards on the 498-yard 18th hole of the Glenwild club in his tidy 31 on the back nine. The Michael Jordan was impressed enough after a round with the brothers to want to take their portfolios to show Nike executives.
As amateurs they defeated some of the best amateurs from named colleges that are probably chasing Tony Finau this year. Last year Tony was the Utah State champion. Tony Finau was named as one of the six top national golfers to represent the United States in the Junior Ryder Cup tournament held in Ireland last year. Gipper Finau was an alternate that played in the same tournament.
Young is in this year. Tony Finau can name a number of European players he met in the Junior Ryder Cup who have turned professional this year while still under twenty. Tony Finau and Gipper Finau are turning golf professional. There is the debate.
Some are cautious about the ability to jump straight from high school into the PGA Tour. Even Tiger Woods’ father thought he needed College golf. Let Hank Haney swing coach for Tiger woods for the last 3 1/2 years have the last say.
Tiger Woods “doesn’t care about what he’s done. He doesn’t care about where he’s been. He doesn’t care about how good he is. He only cares about, ‘What do I need to do today to be better than I was yesterday,”‘ Hank Haney said.

i followed tony today in the final round of the us bank championship and i obviously have to say that this kid hits shots like i’ve never seen before…especially the 16th hole 371 yd par 4 shot…unreal drive…never have i seen a shot like that before. tony is awesome and i wish him the best as he tries to make a name for himself on the PGA Tour. if tony develops some solid course management who knows how many tournaments this kid could win.

I followed Tony a little over a year ago when he attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open at Alpine Country Club in Utah. He played well but had a couple of bad holes and missed moving on to the next qualifier by 2 or 3 shots. I visited with his father during the round and was surprised to learn that he had never played the course before that day. That didn’t seem very smart considering how close he lives and the importance of the tournament. It might be similar to his decision to turn pro without any college experience.

I too saw Tony Finau’s tee shot at the USBank Milwaukee event at Brown Deer. I’ve played Brown Deer for 40 years and have watched the pro’s there for the past 13 years. Absolutely nobody among the pros hits driver on #16. Not ony is it 371 yards, it takes all of 340 yards to carry the water and with traps in front of the green, you must fly the ball to the green, always on your second shot. Until Tony Finau. He takes out driver to the utter amazement of the fans, especially me. With trees on the left, you can ony see half of the green from the tee. So Tony hits a monstrously high draw that went out of sight. Tony pumped his fist because he knew he hit the green. Then the cheers from around the greenside fans wafted back to us at the tee. 371 yards, pin high to 18ft. WOW. He almost hit the green on Saturday and did hit it again on Sunday. There were more fans following Tony than followed Corey Pavin, the returning champ. Tony was worth the price of admission. WOW!

I was amazed at the distance tony was hitting. Im 16 from Canada, and i am also a big hitter. So watching Tony made me work harder to be more like him. His game is nice.
